For an Architectural Memory
Research Coordinator: Joana B. Malheiro
Architectural heritage encompasses more than buildings and urban spaces; it reflects communal culture, shaping the identity of societies over time. Structures and landscapes carry cultural narratives that influence both individual and collective identities, even after their physical form disappears. The Lisbon School of Architecture (FA-ULisboa) plays a key role in preserving this heritage through Arch/ves – Archives of Architecture, Urbanism, and Design, ensuring architectural records remain accessible to researchers and the public. Central to this effort is the Por uma Memória Arquitetónica (POR/ARQ) Research Line, where students engage with archival materials, enhancing their understanding of architecture, urbanism, and design. Arch/ves documents architectural careers and influences, connecting theory and practice to inspire new generations and enrich contemporary discourse. It transforms heritage into a living resource that informs modern architecture, preparing students to address future challenges with a historically grounded perspective.
As FA-ULisboa expands its archives, Arch/ves underscores the ongoing relevance of heritage, driving innovation and excellence in architectural practice. Its mission focuses on preserving, enhancing, and disseminating its collections, promoting research in architecture, urbanism, and design through its archive and research units. Its proactive strategies integrate collection management, digital preservation, and interdisciplinary studies. Collaborating with prestigious institutions, Arch/ves supports heritage projects and fosters architectural culture while involving students in research to equip them for future professional challenges. Looking ahead, Arch/ves plans to launch a Virtual Museum of Architecture, an online platform showcasing digital collections and exhibitions on architecture, urbanism, and design. This virtual museum will provide immersive, interactive experiences, offering global access to specialized collections and fostering dynamic learning for diverse audiences. It aims to democratize access to knowledge, preserve architectural memory, and promote critical discourse by overcoming the constraints of physical space.
Additionally, the museum will encourage collaboration among architects, urban planners, and designers, fostering the exchange of ideas and solutions to contemporary challenges in the field. As a continuously evolving project, the Virtual Museum will grow through ongoing digitization efforts and technological advancements. Its interactive nature has the potential to transform it into a collaborative space where communities of professionals can share projects, discuss pressing issues, and collectively advance architectural knowledge.
